Why a microbial collection
The fundamental role played by microorganisms in sustaining life on Earth is undisputed, but the current knowledge regarding the extent of microbial diversity and its global distribution remains incomplete. The added value created by microbial biodiversity is underestimated, despite microorganisms providing crucial ecosystem services for local and global sustainability and it is for this reason that the international scientific community has mobilized to issue a universal appeal for a collective effort towards understanding and conserving it (continued).
